BLING

John (husband John, as opposed to co-host John, or producer John, or all my friends named John, or of course the CUSTOMERS I REFER TO AS JOHNS) -  anyway, John and I met up for lunch downtown yesterday. It’s funny meeting your husband for lunch. First of all, I actually spent a moment considering what to wear. Secondly, when I arrived at the restaurant, he got up to kiss me. We have been married for 23 years, and I just spent the last 5 days sniffling around the house wearing his old ratty bathrobe, but all of a sudden we’re Nick and Nora Charles.

Then we went jewellery shopping. Yes, we actually did. Now before you start thinking we’re the Howells or something, let me tell you that on the few occasions that we buy each other watches or jewellery, we do so at auction. With both my birthday and Christmas coming up, John likes the idea of one stop shopping, and while my radio sponsors won’t appreciate this, it’s way more cost effective. I don’t have a lot of bling, but what I do have is genuine, old, and quite often has someone else’s initials on it.

It’s all very civilized. You show up at the auction house, register, and then they buzz you through to a little room where you sit at a table and peruse their catalogue, then fill out an order form of the items you’d like to see. It’s a bit like ordering dim sum. They bring you your selection on a tray, and you can take your time trying stuff on and making notes. The pieces can range from small, inexpensive trinkets to Elizabeth Taylor-style rocks.  Other patrons include couples like us, collectors, professional jewellers and appraisers, and society ladies presumably up or down-sizing their stashes. Witness this discussion between two tweedy matrons:

Darling! It’s been ages! What are you here for?
Beth needs a graduation present and I thought sapphires. What about you?
Christmas. Arthur wants Patek Philippe. And I’m tired of servicing the Rolexes.

(I felt like leaning over and telling the ladies my studs weren’t big enough, but one of them was sitting there with me, so……)

I picked out a couple of items, and John will probably bid on them at the actual auction next week. No guarantee. One year I picked out a watch for Christmas, and I got a casserole dish instead. At least I don’t have to service it.

Great story today. I feel bad for people when they work so hard and still feel they have to explain away why they have a few nice things. I guess thats another topic. I have a great bling story for you Maureen. When I got engaged in my thirty's, new husband blending a family of five children I would not let my husband buy me a large engagement ring. I did get a beautifull ring in a plain tiffany setting that is my style. Well on our first anniversary he surprised me with the rock he wanted to buy for me in the first place. Made for my right hand in an original setting. Four years ago I lost that "rock". I didn't know where and was heartbroken every time I thought about it. To some 1 carat may be modest,to others it may be a huge investment, well to my husband it was. There is a maximum for jewelery on house insurance we discovered and the max would not have replaced it. So we got on with life and he never said a word to me about it. Never admonished me once about being careless etc. Maureen this summer I was out back weeding the flower beds and I had dug up a huge shasta daisy to give to one of our friends who wanted it. I was putting the debri in containers and my husband says whats that shining over there. Well low and behold where I had dug up the daisy was my ring. It must have slide off the day I planted the daisy's in my yard. Moral of the story. Don't garden in your jewelery. Get it appraised and insured. But most of all love the one your with. The grass is not greener on the other side. Have a good one! Marianne

Maureen Holloway: What a great story! Thanks Marianne - I'm so happy you found it.

or there is always this: Eight Golden-doodle (golden retriever / poodle mix) puppies were surrendered to the Toronto Humane Society. These adorable animals are all looking for new homes. They are currently about 6 weeks old so until they are ready (8 weeks) we will be accepting applications and be choosing homes for them to go to in a couple of weeks. If you are interested in adopting please visit our Satellite Adoption Center at 2802 Victoria Park to fill out an application.

Maureen Holloway: As the owner of a Golden Doodle that cost me $1500 from a breeder, I can attest to how wonderful these dogs are, and what an incredible opportunity this might be for a prospective owner. Thanks Lori!

I found a man's diamond ring once. It had 9 good size rocks & appeared to have been buried in my mother's front lawn forever. I did my duty with signs, ads, etc and there were no takers. I decided to wear it. The first time my daughter saw it she implored me to take off the old man's ring as it made me look gay... I laughed that off - until someone tried to pick me up at the bar, using a comment about the ring as an ice-breaker!!! It nows sits on my dresser, until I decide to re-purpose it and have something made for my wife.

Who knew our Auntie Mo was so into recycling bling this way. My parents did the same, a ton of good deals to be had and if it is from a well known auction house it is all appraised. How can you go wrong. My hat - off to you and John. This is, in my opinion, the best way to beat the high cost of the jewellery, and it is a ton of fun bidding as well. (I prefer to bid on old cars) The lunch deal is cool too, almost like a little fling, but its with your spouse so its OK! Dates are needed every week, at least one, keeps the flames a burnin at home, (where they should be). PEEPS take note!! You rock MO.
